In the summer the plants bear tall wiry stems that pop up above the finely cut leaves. The flowers are a very pretty, pale lilac colour in the typical petalled, pincushion style of Scabiosas although these flowers are smaller and more dainty than other varieties (it's also called small scabious, or dwarf pincushion plant).
